EJI Racial Justice Essay Contest

We are partnering with the Equal Justice Initiative for an upcoming scholarship contest open to 9th – 12th grade students attending public high school in Forsyth County, where prizes totaling at least $5,000 will be awarded to winning participants.


"Students are asked to examine the history of a topic of racial injustice and to discuss its legacy today. Essays should explain the chosen topic using a specific historical event(s), explore how the injustice persists, and imagine solutions for a future free from racial injustice. Students are encouraged to reflect on how the topic impacts their own lives and communities."

"In recognition of the injustices done to Black residents of Forsyth County, Georgia, in 1912 and afterward, we [...] would like to honor those expelled from the county by providing college scholarships to some of their descendants." 


If you are a direct descendent (e.g.: great-grandchild) of a black resident of Forsyth County in 1912, you may qualify for this $10,000/year scholarship to the accredited higher education institution of your choice. You can learn more, donate to the fund, or  apply on the Forsyth Descendants Scholarship website, or feel free to contact us about this opportunity.

"Leadership Forsyth is seeking your support in restoring Forsyth County history. The class of 2022 is working to rehabilitate, identify, and honor families and former residents of Forsyth County through a gravesite improvement project at Tolbert Street Cemetery." 


Contribute at any level to help our community research, identify, and restore the lost and ignored graves of black residents of Forsyth.
